Emblem

Description
On a blue disc a gold vignette composed of flags, a pike with a gold scroll inscribed ADHUC HIC HESTERNIS in blue letters above, musket, drum, artillery pieces and shot beneath an open book and flaming torch and the numerical letters MCMLXVII at base, all within a red band edged gold and inscribed U.S. ARMY MILITARY HISTORY INSTITUTE in gold letters with a five pointed gold star at base.

Symbolism
The gold vignette reflects the rich heritage and traditions of the United States Army from its origin to the present. The vignette further represents the derivation of the Institute from the original War Department Library and the Army War College Library by use of charges from the War Department Seal and the Army War College Coat of Arms. The open book beneath the lighted torch symbolizes the dual mission of preserving materials of historical significance and making these available for scholarly research. The motto ADHUC HIC HESTERNIS has the literal translation The things of yesterday are still her. (Note: A literalized translation might be, The past is still here.)

Background
The emblem was originally approved for the U.S. Army Military History Research Collection in December 1971. The organization was redesignated to the U.S. Army Military History Institute effective 1 April 1977, at which time the emblem was revised to reflect the new designation.
